Matt Binder Biography
Matt Binder is an American meteorologist working for WGAL as a forecaster and broadcaster of weather. He joined the station in October 1999 and has served the station for over 2 decades. Additionally, he works as a teacher for the Hempfield School District, where he teaches broadcasting & communications technology.

Binder joined the Pennsylvania State University in 1991 after finishing his education at Parkland High School. In 1996, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology with a minor in Mathematics. Also, he has numerous certifications in Media Technology, English education, and Secondary Science, including a graduate Curriculum & Instruction certification from Penn State.
Binder obtained his Master’s in Geoenvironmental Studies from Shippensburg University. He did his graduate work at NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. In this capacity, he co-authored an e-textbook on ozone studies and created web-based educational resources for NASA environmental programs in the late 90s.

Besides his meteorology career, Binder spent almost fifteen years as a teacher of 8th Grade Earth Science at Centerville Middle School. After school, he organizes the region’s Friendship Chess League and coaches middle school chess. For nearly fifteen years, he taught 8th Grade Earth Science at Centerville Middle School. At night, he taught meteorology to students at HACC and West Chester University. Moreover, he created an online web-based course in meteorology for secondary and post-secondary students.
Binder is a meteorological consultant who has forecasted for more than 3 decades. He was an on-air meteorologist for WYOU in Northeast Pennsylvania and WFMZ in Eastern Pennsylvania. Additionally, he was a president of the Penn State Campus Weather Service and spent time with the Pennsylvania State Climatologist Office.
Binder regards himself as a “science geek and space nerd” at heart. In 2004, he was a finalist for NASA’s Astronaut Class. Moreover, he worked on NASA’s Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers. He was a finalist for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year in 2020/21. Currently, he serves as an education advocate with the National State Teacher of the Year organization. He is also active in the community as a scouting volunteer. In 2023, he received the national Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.
