Walt Gray is an American journalist working for KXTV ABC10 as an anchor, specializing in hard news. He joined the station in September 2013 and has served the station for more than a decade. Previously, he worked as the host of the “Walt Gray Show” on KSEG-FM 96.9, “The Eagle.”

Gray launched his career at KCRA in Sacramento in 1988 as sports director. He held the role for five and a half years before he was promoted to morning and noon news anchor in 1993. In this capacity, he began a 15-and-a-half-year run as Sacramento’s prominent morning news anchor. He also won Sacramento Magazine’s “Best Morning TV Anchor” Award for eight successive years. He moved to the anchor desk in 2009. At times, he covered the morning and 11 p.m. newscasts or the morning and 5 p.m. newscasts.
Gray left the TV business in 2012 to work in the local radio station as a morning talk host. He returned to TV with his position at ABC10, the station his wife and Chief Meteorologist Monica Woods has worked since 2001. He has a deep background in journalism, as both his parents and brother have been involved with the industry one way or the other.
Gray launched his career in radio news, serving WERI-AM/FM in Westerly, Rhode Island. He then has TV stops at WMGT in Macon, WINK in Ft. Myers, and WCIX (now WFOR-TV) in Miami before moving to Sacramento in 1988. In 2000, he received an Emmy Award for specialized news reporting.

Gray says the biggest story he’s broadcast was the 2011 Phillip Garrido trial in Placerville. Garrido was sentenced for kidnapping Jaycee Dugard 18 years prior. He started a series of exclusive communications with Gray, which put him on national cable news shows to explain why Garrido was contacting him. Gray’s explanation: “I have no idea.”
