Gil Simmons Biography

Gil Simmons is an American meteorologist working for WTNH as the chief weekday morning meteorologist for WTNH. He is excited to deliver the weather on weekday mornings on NEWS 8.

Gil Simmons Education

Simmons joined Western Connecticut State University after being on active duty in the United States Marine Corps. He later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree.

Simmons works for WTNH as the chief weekday morning meteorologist for WTNH. He is excited to deliver the weather on weekday mornings on NEWS 8. One of his favorite memories at the station was broadcasting Tropical Storm Sandy. At the time, they worked for 21 hours and experienced changing weather conditions every minute. He felt satisfied to share significant information to views and have their backs during the first significant tropical event since 1985 for the region.

Simmons was on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, where he spent six years as a meteorologist/oceanographer. In this role, he forecasted weather conditions worldwide from 1990 to 1996. He then relocated to Connecticut for college and forecasted the weather locally.

Simmons has received two Emmy nominations for his weather broadcasts in Connecticut. In 2002, he received the Associated Press Best Weathercast in Connecticut Award. He serves as a member of the American Meteorological Society and holds their prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal.

Simmons participates in various community fundraisers and events. Every Thanksgiving Day morning, he jumps into an icy lake to help collect funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Also, he gives his time to groups fighting the American Heart Association, Multiple Sclerosis, the Smilow Cancer Center, Connecticut Red Cross, St. Jude, Veteran groups, and multiple 5K charities.
