Joe Farrell Biography

Joe Farrell is an American meteorologist working for WOI-DT Local 5 News as a meteorologist and multimedia journalist since joining the station in November 2025. This is his second stint at the station, having worked here back in 2017.

Joe Farrell Education

Farrell joined Mississippi State University after finishing his high school education. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology with a focus in Broadcast.

Farrell works for WOI-DT Local 5 News as a meteorologist and multimedia journalist. He joined the station with over half a decade of TV/broadcast experience. The Iowa native is thrilled to return home. This is his second stint at the station, having worked here back in 2017. At the time, he worked as a weekend photographer after doing a couple of weather internships at the station.

Following his stint at Local 5 News, Farrell headed to Atlanta, Georgia, as a field producer for The Weather Channel. There, he broadcast everything, including hurricanes, big snowstorms, and gained experience producing TV out in the elements.

Farrell has been passionate about the weather since he was a little kid. His mother remembers him always picking the weather and science books whenever they went to the library. Iowa’s crazy weather, paired with severe season and winter storms, only grew his passion for weather, leading him to where he is today.
