Thomas received the RTDNA John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award in 2015 for his contributions to journalism and freedom of the press. That same year, he had an exclusive interview with the Attorney General, FBI Director, and Secretary of Homeland Security in less than four months.

Thomas won an Emmy Award as part of team broadcast of the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The Houston Association of Black Journalists honored him with the Pinnacle Award in 2011. That same year, he was the focus of a 60-minute C-SPAN coverage about his career and thoughts on journalism. He was also featured in the American Journalism Review. The National Association of Black Journalists named him the 2012 Journalist of the Year. While reporting for the Washington Post, he led major stories like the Oklahoma City bombing and the FBI’s role at Ruby Ridge.
Early Career;
In 1997, Thomas began serving CNN as the Justice Department correspondent. In this capacity, he broke news on cyber-crime, terrorism, the FBI’s Most Wanted list, the search for Osama bin Laden, and the Justice Department’s participation in the Elian Gonzalez case.
Thomas won the National Council on Crime and Delinquency Pass Award for his article “Beyond Grief and Fear.” That article also earned him two Mort Mintz Investigative Awards. Additionally, he was a finalist for the Livingston Young Journalist Award. He joined the Washington Post in 1987, where he covered local Virginia politics, the court, and police beats in Prince William County and the city of Alexandria.
Thomas joined Metro projects staff in 1991. There, he was a member of a team whose work on illegal gun use in the Washington area made it to the finals of the Pulitzer Prize. He kick-started his career at The Roanoke Times and World-News. He serves as member of the National Association of Black Journalists and is the chair of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
