Most of his earnings went to outdoor gear, which he used to run Cross Country for Pittsford Sutherland High School. Though he was a good runner in high school, he was a poor runner in college. He was put on Syracuse University’s CC team, where he only lasted one season. He instead focused his efforts on radio at WAER-FM (NPR), which later earned him a position at 570WSYR-AM. His first day on the job was 9/11/01.
After working in radio, Chodak joined News10Now when it was bout to launch. There, he learned how to tell a story and met his wife. He and Jill went to Boston, where he worked as a reporter at WLVI-TV (CW). One year after the Big Dig collapse, the station was sold, which led to him and 99 others losing their jobs. He then received an offer for a bureau reporter position in Fort Collins for KUSA-TV (NBC) in Denver.
During his time in Denver, Chodak and Gary Wolfe toured northern Colorado together, telling stories about people and nature. In this capacity, they covered the elk’s bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park, the turmoil around the proposed Glade Reservoir, and the devastation left by an EF-3 tornado that passed a half-mile from their truck. They earned an Emmy Award for that tornado coverage.
In 2011, Chodak decided to return to Rochester to be near family. He joined WHAM-TV (ABC), where he was an intern 11 years prior. After 4 years, he joined WROC News 8 as an evening anchor and managing editor.
