Anthony Geary Biography

Anthony Geary is an American actor who is best known for playing the role of Luke Spencer on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital. Prior to his retirement, he received a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work as Luke. Geary appeared in the “Weird Al” Yankovic comedy UHF as a supporting actor; other notable films include Johnny Got His Gun, Disorderlies, Scorchers, Teacher’s Pet, and Fish Tank.

From 1971 to 1972, Geary starred in the NBC soap opera Bright Promise. In The Young and the Restless, he portrayed the rapist George Curtis. In 1978, he was cast as Luke Spencer in the ABC soap General Hospital. The on-screen marriage of his character and Laura Webber in 1981 is the highest-rated soap opera episode of all time. Geary has a total of eight Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

He has appeared in over 50 stage productions, including an award-winning one-man show called Human Scratchings in 1996. Geary was nominated for Daytime Emmys for outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1997 and 1998 and won his second in 1999. He won his third championship in 2000, his fourth in 2003, and his fifth in 2004. Geary set the record for most lead actor wins in Daytime Drama Emmy Awards when he won for the fifth time in 2006. In 1989, he made his film debut as eccentric scientist Philo in Weird Al Yankovic’s UHF.

Due to the actor’s desire to play something other than Luke, Geary returned to General Hospital in 1991 as Luke’s cousin and look-alike Bill Eckert. The character was killed off, and Geary took over as Luke in 1993. Tony appeared in over 50 stage productions, including an award-winning one-man show called Human Scratchings in 1996.

He set a record in 2012 when he won his seventh Daytime Emmy, and he broke it again in 2015 when he won his eighth award for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series after receiving 16 nominations for the same role. On June 23, 2015, Geary completed filming his final scenes on the General Hospital set. His most recent episode aired on July 27, 2015. He later made a non-speaking cameo appearance on May 4, 2017, to help co-star and former on-screen wife Jane Elliot retire.
