In this role, he shot, wrote, and edited his stories for the evening newscasts. During the winter of that year, he was promoted to work as a 4 a.m. reporter from reporting at 4 p.m. In this role, he and a photographer filed and edited his stories. Also, he delivered live reports all over San Diego County.
Richards has broadcasted some of the hugest breaking news in the area including the most lethal in U.S. history and the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. Also, he broadcast presidential visits and was at the forefront of huge wildfires in California. Moreover, he has gone on many trips to the U.S.-Mexico border to report on the immigration disaster.
Before arriving in San Diego, he reported for the NBC station in Bakersfield, where he interned when he was a high schooler. He was promoted to work as a producer of two evening newscasts for Kern County before transitioning to his reporting role a few years later. He works as a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.
