Art Norman Biography

Art Norman is an American reporter working for NBC 5 News as a general assignment reporter. He has been working for the station since joining the news team in July 1982.

Norman attended Johnson C. Smith University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in physics and maths. Additionally, he is part of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and also holds a first-class F.C.C. engineer’s license.

Norman is a general assignment reporter for NBC5 News. Prior to joining NBC5 News, he was working at WMAR-TV, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States as a weekend anchor and reporter since 1979. Before his tenure with WMAR-TV, he served as a reporter at WSOC-TV and WPCQ-TV, both in Charlotte, North Carolina. Art started his broadcasting profession in 1969, as a television engineer at WCCB-TV, as well in Charlotte.

His initiative led to an NBC5 News exclusive investigation of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department in February 1990, probing allegations of civil rights violations throughout a questionable drug raid on a suburban tavern. Norman’s documentary on the plight of poor kids won a 1978 School Bell Award from the National Association of Educators.

He labored as a photographer on the George Foster Peabody Award-winning edition of NBC’s “Weekend Magazine” and writer. Norman obtained North Carolina’s RTNDA Award for his coverage of a fatal air balloon crash in 1975. His involvement with the community is extensive. In addition to hosting several community events each year, he is a spokesman for the United Negro College Fund and works as an on-air host of their telethon.
