Arvind Krishna is an American executive with IBM who was named chief executive officer in January 2020. Krishna will assume the role on April 6, 2020, succeeding Ginni Rometty who had served as CEO since 2012.

Ginni will continue as executive chairman of the Board and serve through the end of the year when she will retire after almost 40 years with the company. Previously, Krishna was the senior vice president and director, of IBM Research. In this role, Arvind helps guide the company’s overall technical strategy, leading a global organization of approximately 3,000 scientists and technologists located at 12 labs on six continents.

He also served as the general manager of IBM Systems and Technology Group’s Development and Manufacturing organization, which is responsible for the advanced engineering and development of a full technology portfolio, ranging from advanced semiconductor materials to leading-edge microprocessors, servers, and storage systems.

Arvind previously worked as the general manager of IBM Information Management, which included database, information integration, and Big Data software solutions. Before that, Krishna was vice president of strategy for IBM Software. Krishna has held several key technical roles in IBM Software and IBM Research, where he pioneered IBM’s security software business.
