Butterfield first gained fame for starring in the lead role of Bruno in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas in 2008. Bruno is an eight-year-old German boy living in Berlin. He and his family move to rural occupied Poland with his family after his father, a Schutzstaffel officer, is promoted. Unbeknownst to the horrors that go on in the extermination camp near the back garden from his bedroom window, he befriends a Jewish prisoner of his age named Shmuel.
Butterfield’s performance in the film won him nominations for a British Independent Film Most Promising Newcomer Award, an NSPCC Young British Performer of the Year Award, and a Young Artist Best Performance in an International Feature Film – Leading Young Performers Award.
Director Mark Herman said that they first found Butterfield early in the audition process since he was on the initial audition tape he received. Herman and producer David Heyman sought an actor who would fruitfully capture the lead role’s innocence and naiveté. In this magnitude, they asked each child about their knowledge of the Holocaust. Asa Butterfield Career
Butterfield studied at Stoke Newington School and started his acting career at 7 at the Young Actors Theatre Islington. He then landed small roles in After Thomas and Son of Rambow. In 2008, he made a guest appearance in Ashes to Ashes, starring as Donny. That same year, he starred in the lead role in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
After defeating hundreds of boys, Butterfield secured a role in Mr. Nobody which he auditioned for at the same time as The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. However, he decided not to act in Mr. Nobody. In 2008, he played the role of Mordred in the Merlin episode, The Beginning of the End. He recurred the role in several following episodes. In 2010, he played a small role in The Wolfman. That same year, he starred as Norman Green in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.
When he was 13, Butterfield starred in the lead role in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. He also starred as Andrew “Ender” Wiggin in Ender’s Game. After shooting Ender’s Game, he joined the cast of X+Y as Nathan Ellis. His performance in the film won him a BIFA for Best Actor nomination.
