Blaine Gabbert is an American football quarterback playing for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2011 when he was in his junior year at Missouri.

Blaine Gabbert Education/High School Football Career

Gabbert studied at Parkway West High School in Ballwin. There, he played for the Parkway West Longhorns high school football team. Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 14 national player overall at any position. Also, he is a five-star blue-chip All-American. In the summer of 2007, he participated in the Elite 11 quarterback camp where he secured the camp MVP honors.

In January 2008, he played in the US Army All-American Game. During his senior year, he passed 623 yards and had five touchdowns though he sustained a foot injury which made him play only 4 games. As a junior, he passed 1,523 yards, had 20 touchdowns, and had another 458 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

During his sophomore year as a starter, he threw about 1,100 yards and had 11 touchdowns. He graduated high school in 2008 and was deemed a big college recruitment candidate. Additionally, Rivals.com rated him as a five-star recruit and was mentioned in the list of the highest-ranked pro-style quarterback in the country.

Gabbert plays for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). While in college, he played football at Missouri before he left for the NFL draft in 2011 after his junior year. College Career

Upon graduating high school in 2008, Gabbert changed his decision to commit to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers after the dismissal of head coach Bill Callahan. Ultimately, he joined the University of Missouri. During his freshman year, Coach Gary Pinkel put him as the third-string quarterback behind Chase Daniel and Chase Patton.

Gabbert participated in five games in reserve duty and led the Tiger offense to a touchdown against Colorado and a field goal against Nevada. He scored 5 out of 13 passing tries for 43 yards and rushed six times for 22 yards. In 2009, he debuted throwing 313 yards and attaining three touchdowns in the air and another one on the ground while playing against the Illinois Fighting Illini in the yearly Arch Rivalry.

Throwing 34 passes with 281 yards and two touchdowns, he led Missouri to a 23–13 win against Illinois. Next, he defeated Colorado even though he was shelved due to an injury in the 4th quarter. In the game, he scored 17 passes with 191 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he defeated  Texas A&M  scoring 31 passes with 361 yards, and three touchdowns. While playing against Oklahoma, he scored 30 passes with 308 yards and a touchdown. Generally, he had 3,186 passing yards, 232 rushing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, five rushing touchdowns, and nine interceptions during his time with the Tigers.

College Ranking

Gabbert established career highs with 30 finishes and 468 yards while playing against Baylor. His yards were second to Jeff Handy’s 480 yards against Oklahoma State in 1992. Several league media outlets mentioned him for second–Team All-Big 12 honors. Also, the AP gave him an honorable mention after rating him 2nd in the Big 12 and 29th in the NCAA in passing competence with a rating of 140.45.

The Big 12 ranked him 4th while the NCAA ranked him 11th in total offense with an average of 292.08. He had the 3rd-highest single-season passing total in school history with the completion of 262 passes for 3,593 yards, nine interceptions, and 24 touchdowns. Aside from sports, he received recognition for his triumph in the classroom and was mentioned in the 1st-Team Academic All-Big 12.

Jacksonville Jaguars

2011 season

In January 2011, Gabbert declared that he would withhold his senior year to enter the 2011 NFL Draft. The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2011 when he was in his junior year at Missouri. In exchange, they traded up six spots with the Washington Redskins. He was the only drafted quarterback in the first-round category to clinch a Super Bowl when he backed up Tom Brady while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team officially signed him for $12 million over a four-year contract.

Even though he wasn’t scheduled to be a starting quarterback, coach Jack Del Rio gave him playing time when David Garrard was booted in the preseason and Luke McCown’s poor performance in the first two games. On September 18, 2011, he played against the New York Jets in Week 2, making it his first NFL regular season game. The next week, he was the starter against the Carolina Panthers. While playing against the Cincinnati Bengals in week 5, he passed a 74-yard touchdown to Jason Hill.

When he was 22 years old, he served as the youngest player in league history to begin 14 games in a season. During most of the season, he played while having a toe injury on his plant foot. During his rookie season, he was sacked 40 times(ranked 3rd by any quarterback) and fumbled 14 times(most in the NFL by a quarterback).

Gabbert completing 50.8% served as the second; worst in the league for passers with over 200 tries. His 5.4 yards per try and 65.4 passer rating earned him last place among the league’s qualifying passers.

2012 season

Under head coach Mike Mularkey, Gabbert threw 260 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a career-high 96.1 quarterback rating while playing against the Minnesota Vikings. While playing against the Indianapolis Colts, he threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts. Against the Bears, he threw two interceptions and fumbled once.

While playing against the Oakland Raiders, he had a labrum tear in his non-throwing shoulder during the second quarter. Thus, Chad Henne. replaced him. Before leaving the game, he had 8 passes for 110 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown pass. Next, the team played against the Green Bay Packers where he for more than 300 yards and finished 27 attempts for 303 yards. The throw served as his first in his career.

His season ended on November 21, 2012, after he was put on injury reserve, listed as a right forearm injury. The team also said that he had been playing with a torn labrum in his left shoulder that needed surgery.

2013 season

During the 2013 season, he returned under head coach Gus Bradley during which he played only 3 games. He finished the season with one touchdown and seven interceptions. At the start of the season, he was tending a broken thumb which he sustained during a pre-season game. Further, he had a lacerated right hand that required 15 stitches. Due to the injury, he couldn’t play against the Raiders. On October 6, 2023, he was forced out of the game after hurting his hamstring while playing against the St. Louis Rams during the 3rd quarter.

San Francisco 49ers

2014 season

On March 11, 2014, the San Francisco 49ers took him as a sixth-round draft pick. Coach Jim Harbaugh said that Gabbert was talented and that he had the chance to prove that he was a powerful player. On October 19, 2014, he debuted as part of the 49ers’ regular-season players when they played against the Denver Broncos in Week 7. At the end of the season, he had a touchdown in his sole appearance in the 2014 season and had 3 passes for 38 yards out of 7.

2015 season

The 49ers re-signed Gabbert on a two-year $2 million contract on March 10, 2015. When Colin Kaepernick was benched, he was named the team’s starter under head coach Jim Tomsula. He led the team to a 17–16 victory against the Atlanta Falcons on November 8, 2015. At the end of the game, he has 15 passes for 185 yards, two interceptions, and two touchdowns. The next day, the team declared that he would be started when they played against the Seattle Seahawks. They lost the game with him finishing 22 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown with a 98.2 passer rank.

While playing against the Bears, he rushed a 44-yard touchdown during the 4th quarter, his first career touchdown, and threw a 71-yard game-winning touchdown to Torrey Smith. The team won 26–20. At the end of the season, Gabbert had 2,031 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and seven interceptions for an 86.2 passer rank.

2016 season

Gabert served as the starting quarterback for the season opener. He started the first 5 games and was later swapped for Colin Kaepernick after he went 1–4 by coach Chip Kelly. He briefly replaced Kaepernick later in the season. He was benched after he had a deficient performance in Week 12. At the end of the season, he had five passing touchdowns, 925 passing yards, and six interceptions with 173 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals signed him on May 10, 2017, for a year. Following Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton, he served as the third-string quarterback under head coach Bruce Arians. During week 11, he was mentioned when Palmer and Stanton sustained injuries. While playing against the Houston Texans, he threw 257 yards and a career-high three touchdowns even though they lost 31–21. On December 18 of that year, Stanton replaced him as started since he had not thrown a touchdown in back-to-back games. At the end of the season, he had six touchdowns, 1,086 passing yards, and six interceptions.

Tennessee Titans

On March 27, 2018, the Tennessee Titans and Gabbert signed a two-year contract. In September of that year, he served as the team’s starter when they played against the Miami Dolphins. He joined the game after  Marcus Mariota left due to an elbow injury. As a result, he started the game against the Texans where they won 20–17. In week 3, he started against the Jaguars, his former team. He had eight passing yards before he left the game with a concussion. In 2018, started the game with a Wild Card playoff spot on the line because Mariota had suffered another injury. While playing against the Colts, he passed 165 yards, had one touchdown, and two interceptions. The team released him on March 15, 2019.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

On March 27, 2019, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers recruited Gabbert. He was put on reserve injury due to a dislocated shoulder on September 24, 2019. On April 2, 2020, he re-signed with the team for a year. While playing against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, he served as the backup for Tom Brady and the team won  31–9, earning Gabbert his first Super Bowl win. In May and April of 2010, the team re-signed him. In 2022, he was Brady’s backup and only appeared in week 18 when they played against the Falcons. At the end of the game, he finished 6 passes for 29 yards and had a touchdown pass to Russell Gage.

Kansas City Chiefs

On April 19, 2023, the Chiefs signed him. In the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, he served as the team’s starter when the team put Patrick Mahomes on rest. At the game, he finished 15 passes for 154 yards, had one interception, and 46 rushing yards winning 13–12. He had his second Super Bowl win when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, his previous team,(25-22) in Super Bowl LVIII.

On December 29, 2022, Gabbert alongside his brothers helped rescue four individuals near Davis Islands and Peter O. Knight Airport after a helicopter had an emergency landing. At the time, they were riding jet skis when Gabbert said that he saw a seemingly crew boat in the water broken into 4 pieces and two yellow life jackets. They checked out the scene before contacting 911. Thus, they helped three people onto their jet skis from the water. When the Tampa Bay police officers arrived, they removed the 4th person from the water.
