Brad Ledford Accident

Ledford is linked to a car crash that left Madison Cawthorn, a former U.S. congressman from North Carolina, partially paralyzed more than a decade ago. Ledford(17 at the time) and Madison(18 at the time) are childhood friends who were traveling through Florida at the time of the crash in 2014, with him driving and Madison as a passenger, in a 2007 BMW X3 owned by his father’s company.

According to Ledford, he began dozing off while driving to North Carolina from a spring break trip in Florida in April 2014. As a result, he veered from the interstate and crashed his father’s SUV into a concrete barricade at about 65 miles per hour, erupting into flames almost immediately after impact. Madison, on the other hand, was sleeping in the passenger seat, reclined back with his legs on the dashboard.

Following the crash, Ledford then moved an unconscious Madison from the car through the passenger window since the driver-side door was jammed and he failed to kick out the windshield. While pulling Madison from the car, a bystander came and helped him carry him 200 yards away from the car. Madison suffered a crushed spine, a broken pelvis, and broken ankles, leading to permanent paralysis from the waist down.

Events after the accident;

After the accident, Madison’s father and brother initially credited Ledford for saving his life. However, in 2017, Cawthorn accused Ledford of leaving him in the “fiery tomb” of the vehicle and running into the woods to save himself, leading to a long-running legal battle and public dispute over the details of the event. He also claimed he was pronounced dead at the scene, opposed to the official police reports, which listed him as “incapacitated.” When confronted about his claims, Madison said he actually had no memory of the accident itself, and Ledford said he was very hurt by the false public accusations.

Though Madison initially received a $3 million settlement, he later sued for an additional $30 million. He also sued Ledford and his father’s company multiple times for personal injury. He dropped the final $30 million lawsuit against Ledford in July 2022. Despite the legal battles and public accusations, they reportedly reconciled with going to Madison’s election victory party in 2020, where he introduced him as “the guy who saved my life.”
