In February 2001, Ladun was diagnosed with breast cancer. As a result, she underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. During her recovery, she began running and has competed in several marathons. After a period of supposed remission, the cancer returned in 2007.

After successfully finishing chemotherapy, she prioritized ensuring that the public had access to cancer information. She credits her faith as the basis of her strength to fight the disease. She works as the regional spokeswoman for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and has written two books about her recovery.
