In January 2013, he revealed he was suffering from dementia. Psychiatrist Daniel Amen made the initial diagnosis of damage to his brain. During medical examinations and scans, Daniel Amen found three holes in the brain, along with other damage.
On March 30, 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19. He was one of 15 residents at a New Orleans senior residence to test positive for the virus. Although Dempsey was cleared a few days later, he died on April 4 due to complications from the virus.
Dempsey is survived by a wife, Carlene, three children, a sister, and three grandchildren, NOLA.com reported.
