Carlos Boozer Career

Boozer is a two-time NBA All-Star who has served the Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers. He spent his last season playing overseas with the Guangdong Southern Tigers.

Boozer was chosen to join the U.S. Olympic basketball team. In this capacity, he earned an Olympic bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics and an Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Despite being a member of the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2008, he didn’t compete in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship because of his wife’s pregnancy.

Cleveland Cavaliers (2002–2004)

In 2002, the Cleveland Cavaliers picked him with the 35th overall pick in the NBA draft. During his rookie campaign, he averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, following it up with 5.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game in his second year.

Following the 2003–04 season, the Cavaliers could either let him be a restricted free agent or keep him under contract for one more year at a $695,000 salary. They alleged they had reached an understanding with Boozer and his agent on a deal for roughly $39 million over six years, which he would have signed if released from his existing contract. Later, they opted to release him as a restricted free agent. During this time, the Utah Jazz gave him a six-year, $70 million contract, which the Cavaliers chose not to match because of salary cap considerations.

On July 30, 2004, Boozer officially signed with the Jazz. Then Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund said that Boozer failed to show the trust and respect they had given him. However, Boozer denied that he made any commitment to the Cavaliers. After signing the deal with Utah, he said that he is a man of his word.

Boozer said that he initially wanted to re-sign with the Cavaliers, a decision he forewent because he and his team discovered that his discussions with the Cavaliers may lead to a tampering violation investigation from the NBA and a severe penalty for the Cavaliers if he signed.

Utah Jazz (2004–2010)

During his initial season with the Jazz in 2004–05, Boozer averaged 17 points and 9 rebounds per game. An injury made him miss the later part of the season, leading the Jazz to miss the playoffs for only the second time in 22 years. Larry Miller, the team owner, publicly criticized him for what he perceived as a lack of effort.

While Boozer was still healing from injury at the start of the 2005–06 season, he aggravated a hamstring, which made him miss the first half of that season. He returned in late February, gradually getting back into the game by coming off the bench for the Jazz. He rejoined the starting lineup in the middle of March. Since then, he performed well, averaging more than 20 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game.

During the start of the 2006–07 season, Boozer won the Western Conference Player of the Week Award. Further, he helped the team win eleven of their first twelve games. Though he was named part of the NBA All-Star roster as a reserve, he didn’t participate because of a stress fracture in his left fibula.

Boozer scored 41 points in an April 23, 2007, game against the Houston Rockets, tying the career high he had set on March 26th against the Washington Wizards. Further, he spearheaded the Jazz past the Rockets in game 7 of the first round in the NBA Playoffs. He scored 35 points to secure the victory in his first playoff series, where he grabbed 14 rebounds and two clutch free throws.

The Jazz won their second-round series against the upstart Golden State Warriors, 4 games to 1, progressing to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1998. Despite losing 4 games to 1 to the San Antonio Spurs, Boozer ended the season with 20.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game and played in 74 of 82 games. He increased his output during the playoffs, averaging 23.5 points and 12.2 rebounds per game, and appearing in all 17 Jazz playoff games.

2007 to 2010

The Western Conference chose Boozer as the Player of the Month in November 2007. By mid-December, he was mentioned among the league’s top five performers in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage. He was picked as a backup in the All-Star Game, where he averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play. On February 13, 2008, he recorded his first career triple-double while playing against the Seattle SuperSonics, averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.

While the Jazz faced the Houston Rockets in the 2008 playoffs, the Rockets focused their defense on limiting Boozer, which reduced his production to an average of 16 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. However, the Jazz defeated them 4–2.

During the 2008–09 season, Boozer missed 44 games(from late November 2008 to late February 2009) after arthroscopic left knee surgery. As a result, fans and media scrutinized his ability to stay healthy. After he played in 37 games, he averaged 16.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. With free agency approaching at the season’s end, many expected him to leave the Jazz. However, he surprised many by deciding to stay for the 2009–10 season. Both Boozer and Jazz management publicly expressed their satisfaction with his decision to return. In early January 2009, he underwent surgery to remove loose cartilage.

During the 2009–10 season, Boozer scored 19.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He also shot 56.2% from the field, which was a career high. He played in 78 of 82 games and avoided injury.

He also assisted the Bulls to obtain the first seed in the Eastern Conference. The following season saw him decline, averaging just 15 points and 8.5 rebounds per game (while playing in all 66 games).

During the 2012–13 season, Boozer played in 79 games, averaging 6.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He scored a season-high performance with 36 points and 12 rebounds in a 107–105 overtime victory against the Toronto Raptors. However, the Bulls released him on July 15, 2014, due to the amnesty clause.

Los Angeles Lakers (2014–2015)

The Los Angeles Lakers claimed Boozer off amnesty waivers on July 17, 2014. The Lakers paid $3.25 million of his $16.8 million salary, while the Bulls covered the remaining $13.55 million. He scored a season-high performance of 28 points in a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on February 4, 2015. He played his last game in the NBA on April 15, 2015, recording 10 points and six rebounds in a 122–99 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

Guangdong Southern Tigers (2016–2017)
