Heaton is famous for playing the role of Jonathan Byers in Netflix’s Stranger Things. Further, he has had roles in As You Are, Marrowbone, The New Mutants, No Future, and The Souvenir Part II. With no formal acting training, he considered acting when he worked for extras and commercial agencies to add to his income as a musician and bartender.
In 2015, he guest starred in a string of British television dramas and was cast in three big projects, counting Stranger Things. His initial appearance came when he acted in ITV’s DCI Banks and Vera. Next, he guest-starred in BBC One’s Casualty.
In his feature film role, he co-starred with Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt in Shut In in 2016. At the same time, he filmed As You Are. His breakthrough role came when he played Stranger Things’ Jonathan Byers. In 2017, he secured a main role in Marrowbone.
In May of the same year, he earned the role of Samuel “Sam” Guthrie / Cannonball in The New Mutants. He starred in the “Elephant Man” in the role of Joseph Merrick. However, the film was not produced because the cast lacked a disabled person. He starred in No Future in 2021 and in The Souvenir Part II.
In 2021, he starred opposite Catherine Keener in the independent film No Future and was part of the cast of the critically acclaimed drama The Souvenir Part II. Since he first moved to London, he became an avid football fan and a keen avid supporter of Arsenal F.C.

Heaton went to London at the age of 16. He played in various bands before joining the noise-rock band Comanechi as the drummer. During his time there, the band issued an album in 2013 and went on tour for more than 1 and a half years. Next, he joined the London-based psychedelic band, Half Loon.
