Charlie Hunnam is an English actor and screenwriter who rose to prominence by starring in FX’s Sons of Anarchy as Jax Teller from 2008 to 2014, for which he won two nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor. When he was 18 years old, he landed his first big role when he secured the role of 15-year-old Nathan Maloney in Channel 4’s Queer as Folk.

Hunnam later secured the role of Jason in the first three episodes of the show. Briefly, he modeled and did photo shoots for  Kangol Caps. However, he realized that modeling was not for him. When he was 18 years old, he landed his first big role when he secured the role of 15-year-old Nathan Maloney in Channel 4’s  Queer as Folk. Hunnam broadened his career with roles in Young Americans, Undeclared,  Abandon,  Nicholas Nickleby, and Cold Mountain. Because he wanted to play roles that would benefit him in the long run, he returned to the UK where he starred as Pete Dunham in Green Street. However, he received a lot of criticism for his Cockney accent with some deeming it as the “worst accent in movie history” lists.

2008 to present;

From 2008 to 2014, Hunman starred as  Jackson “Jax” Teller in Sons of Anarchy. In 2011, he starred as Gavin Nichols in Matthew Chapman’s The Ledge. The following year, he appeared in 3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom and Jay in Deadfall. He then played the role of Raleigh Becket in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, for which he won the Huading Best Global Emerging Actor Award. He was supposed to play the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey but he backed out of the role due to scheduling conflicts with Sons of Anarchy.

Hunnam worked with Guillermo del Toro again in Crimson Peak. He starred as Percy Fawcett in The Lost City of Z and King Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. In 2019, he starred in The Gentlemen with Matthew McConaughey. Along with Mel Gibson, he starred in Last Looks. That same year, he had his first feature for Apple TV+ with a role in Shantaram. The following year, he starred in Netflix’s Rebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire. He will recur his role in Rebel Moon-Part Two: The Scargiver set to premiere on Netflix on April 14, 2014.

Screenwriting

After graduating college, Hunnam initially wanted to direct and write his films. Before he appeared in Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam sold his screenplay, Vlad, following the real-life story of Vlad the Impaler, to Summit Entertainment in co-production with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment. Hunnam learned Vlad’s story from Romanian locals during the filming of Cold Mountain. He said that he had not gotten a role in 1 and a half years and planned to move back to England to live with his mother if he had not sold the script since he was broke.

In 2013, Hunnam said that he was creating a screenplay based on a Rolling Stone article that he chose about drug lord Edgar Valdez Villareal in 2011. Also, he is developing a film about the culture of gypsies in Britain which he regards as one of the most bright and fascinating parts of British society.
