Cher Hwang Biography

Cher Hwang is an American journalist of Korean descent working for NewsNation as the host of Gamer Galaxy since September 2015. She joined the network in 2024 as a producer. Previously, she worked as the lead producer at WGN in Chicago, Illinois.

Hwang joined Loyola University Chicago after finishing high school. In 2018, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Media Studies. While in college, she served as treasurer for the Council of Pan Asian Americans and sat on the executive board of the Korean Student Organization.

Before working for NewsNation, Hwang worked as a bureau reporter at NTV News (KHGI) in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was also a bilingual Korean-English segment producer at KBC News Magazine in Chicago. Moreover, she was a multimedia producer & on-air/ digital reporter at KXRM FOX 21 News in Colorado Springs.

Hwang produced the morning show at Fox31/ Channel 2 in Denver. Also, she produced and reported for Denver’s #1 morning lifestyle show, “Great Day Colorado.” She has also produced several award-winning broadcasts and has received two nominations for the Crystal Pillar Awards from the Upper Midwest Emmy Chapter.

Hwang discovered her interest in TV journalism while watching South Korean broadcasts when she occasionally lived there in her youth. She knew she wanted to be a journalist after watching Son Suk-Hee’s coverage of the Sewol ferry incident at JTBC News, where they worked to expose the unfair perspective of the South Korean public and the broader governmental problem. This inspired her, and she hopes to mirror that type of journalism.

Hwang loves entertainment shows that are also educational, having watched Korean game shows that integrated intellectual expertise or educational experiments. These shows shaped her understanding of the world, and she hopes to produce shows that affect others similarly to how they did her.
