Chris Norman Biography

Chris Norman is an English soft rock singer who was the lead singer of Smokie, an English soft rock band that gained popularity in Europe in the 1970s. “Stumblin’ In,” a duet with Suzi Quatro released in 1978, was a big hit in the United States.

Chris Norman Career

Norman got his first guitar at the age of seven, with the advent of rock and roll. Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Lonnie Donegan were among his early musical influences. Norman’s parents moved around the country a lot during his childhood, which resulted in him attending nine different schools and living in places like Redcar, Luton, Kimpton, and Nottingham. However, by 1962, the family had returned to Norman’s mother’s hometown of Bradford.

As he approached his twelfth birthday, Norman enrolled at St. Bede’s Grammar School, where he met future Smokie members Alan Silson and Terry Uttley. Norman and Silson began meeting up as teenagers, influenced by the new era of groups such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, as well as folk singer, Bob Dylan and spent nearly all of their spare time learning new songs on their guitars.

They persuaded Uttley to join them, and they formed their first band with a drummer friend named Ron Kelly. The Yen, Essence, and Long Side Down were just a few of the names they went by before settling on “The Elizabethans.” When Ron Kelly left the band in 1973, an old friend named Pete Spencer was asked to take over on the drums, and the band that became Smokie was complete.

Smokie had success touring all over the world between 1974 and the early 1980s, but the strain and pressure of constantly being away from home and family were beginning to take its toll on Norman. By the early 1980s, he had made the decision to devote more time to writing and working in the studio.

Norman and Spencer began collaborating on songs for other artists, including hits for Kevin Keegan and the England football team’s “This Time (We’ll Get It Right).” He also collaborated with Agnetha Fältskog (on her solo album), Racey (co-writer of “Baby It’s You”), Donovan (on Donovan), and Heavy Metal Kids.

In 2004, he appeared on the German TV station ProSieben’s Comeback Show, where he performed “Stumblin’ In” as a duet with C. C. Catch.
