In 2008, Stewart competed for the Miss Texas USA title, making this her fifth attempt. In the competition, she previously placed first runner-up in both the 2006 and 2007 events, third runner-up in 2005, and made the semi-finals in 2003. She first appeared in the stage pageant in 2002, where she made semi-finals of the Miss Texas USA 2003 pageant competing as Miss Fort Bend County.
Stewart competed as Miss Fort Bend County in 2004, placing third runner-up to Tyler Willis at Miss Texas USA 2005. The next year, she participated as Miss Harris County at Miss Texas USA 2006, placing first runner-up to Lanning for the second time. Instead of competing for a local title in 2007, Stewart entered as an at-large delegate for Miss Texas USA 2008 while holding the Miss Fort Bend County title. She made the final two in the state-televised pageant, being crowned Miss Texas USA 2008 and the second African-American to win the crown at Miss Texas USA. Additionally, she won the Everything but Water Swimsuit Award.
Stewart won the Miss USA 2008 pageant while representing Texas, making her the ninth Texan to win the Miss USA title. During her reign as Miss USA, she served multiple charities, did media interviews, and made public appearances. She attended the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 26, 2008.
Stewart represented the US at the Miss Universe pageant on July 13, 2008. She won a spot on the Top 10 and became the second consecutive Miss USA to trip and fall during the evening gown competition.
