During George W. Bush’s second term, Bongino was assigned to the Presidential Protection Division after joining the Secret Service in 1999. After Barack Obama was elected president, he remained on protective duty until May 2011, when he left to run for the United States Senate. Life Inside the Bubble, Bongino’s first book about his career as a Secret Service agent, was released in 2013. The Fight, his second book, was published in January 2016.

He discusses his experiences protecting Presidents Bush and Obama, as well as investigating federal crimes, in it. Former colleagues chastised him for using his Secret Service background in his political campaign and for claiming to have secret information based on conversations he overheard in the Obama White House. For violating Twitter’s Civic Integrity policy, Bonginos’ Twitter account was temporarily suspended on January 7, 2021.

He went on to say that he didn’t know whether the tumor was cancerous or benign, but that he would fly to New York on September 25 for further testing. On October 2, he announced that he had received a “bad phone call” from doctors and that he would be having surgery on October 7.

Following his surgery, he tweeted that the “entire tumor” in his neck had been removed, but that he most likely had lymphoma. He stated that he would seek treatment in the future. On October 16, he confirmed that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that he would continue treatment in consultation with his doctors.
