Sister Rosetta Tharpe paid Little Richard to open her show in Macon, Georgia, in October 1947. Richard appeared in Hudson’s Medicine Show in 1949, performing Louis Jordan’s “Caldonia.” During this time, Richard also performed in drag under the name “Princess LaVonne.”

Richard joined his first musical band, Buster Brown’s Orchestra, in 1950, and was given the stage name Little Richard by Brown. In and out of drag, Richard performed for various vaudeville acts such as Sugarfoot Sam from Alabama, the Tidy Jolly Steppers, and Broadway Follies. “Every Hour” was his first single and a Georgia hit. In February 1952, Richard left RCA Victor after his records there failed to chart.

In February 1953, Richard signed with Don Robey’s Peacock Records. Disillusioned with the music industry, he took a job as a dishwasher for Greyhound Lines. In 1954, he formed the Upsetters, a harder-driving rhythm and blues band with drummer Charles Connor and saxophonist Wilbert “Lee Diamond” Smith, and toured under Clint Brantley’s management.

Richard joined Little Johnny Taylor on a Southern tour in 1954. In February 1955, Richard sent a demo to Lloyd Price’s label, Specialty Records. Richard waited months before receiving a call from the label. Richard recorded “Tutti Frutti” in September 1955, and it became an instant hit. In A, it peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Top 100.
