Dave Madsen is an American journalist working for Western Mass News(WSHM-TV) as the host of Western Mass News: Getting Answers, the Sunday morning news and information program. He joined the station in 1992 and has served the station for over 3 decades. Previously, he worked for WWLP for twelve years.

Madsen joined the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1969 after finishing his studies at Southampton schools and Easthampton High School. In 1973, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies.

Madsen has worked in the news broadcasting industry for over 5 decades. Previously, he worked for WWLP for twelve years. He launched his broadcasting career in 1970 with WMAS in Springfield. In late 1970, he started a nine-year association with WHMP Radio in Northampton.
The Southampton native worked as an adjunct professor at UMass from 2000 to 2014. In this capacity, he created and taught a TV news writing and reporting course in the Journalism department. In 2011, he served as an inductee of the New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Silver Circle. The previous year, he received the Western Mass Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Award.
Madsen made history in September 2017 as the first television broadcaster from Western Mass to be inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was also the first individual from Western Massachusetts to win the “Jimmy” Award for his continued support of cancer research and the care of children with cancer. Additionally, he earned the Jimmy Fund’s prestigious Bob Cheyne Lifetime Achievement Award for the years he has devoted to the Jimmy Fund. The Jimmy Fund Council of Western Massachusetts also granted him its Sadowsky Visionary Award.

Madsen has also received the Sr. M. Catherine Laboure Award from the Brightside for Families in Children, the William D. Mullins Man of the Year Award, and the Brightside Golf Classic’s William Corriden Award. The viewers of Western Mass News have acknowledged him with the Valley Advocate’s “Best of Valley” Award. He is proud of receiving the “Favorite Local TV Personality” honor in the Springfield Republican/Masslive Reader Raves poll for eight solid years.
Community Work
Active in the community, Madsen has been a longtime member of the Jimmy Fund Council of Western Massachusetts, where he is the current vice president and a past president. Moreover, he worked as the chair of the Jimmy Fund – Jeffrey Vinick Classic, Western Massachusetts’ most successful golf tournament. Since 1987, he has worked as that tournament’s emcee.
Madsen works as an MC of several events all over New England for the Jimmy Fund. Additionally, he emcees multiple charity golf tournaments, including Brightside and the very popular concerts with the Dan Kane Singers. Also, he emcees the Baystate Health’s Rays of Hope Walk annual fundraising walk.
