Dean Blandino Biography

Dean Blandino is the former head of officiating for the XFL. Before he served as the NFL’s Vice President of Officiating from 2013 to 2017, and also as a host of the Good Calls podcast on iHeartRadio. He is as well an Executive Producer of ‘Her Turf.’ In 2015, he did stand-up comedy in numerous comedy clubs in New York City.

Dean Blandino Career

Blandino began as an intern in the NFL’s officiating department. He later moved up as a full-time employee after the 1994 season. Blandino was then assigned to organize instant replay when it was introduced in the NFL in 1999; He managed the program for six years. He also served as a replay official for two Super Bowls.

In 2009, Blandino dropped the NFL and started a business in California to train and evaluate replay officials. In 2012, He went back to the NFL as director of officiating, and in February 2013 was delegated Vice President of Officiating taking over from Carl Johnson. Blandino left the NFL in May 2017.

In June 2017, Blandino became part of Fox Sports in the position of analyst for the network’s NFL and college football coverage. In May 2018, Blandino took over a new role, as director of instant replay for NCAA football; the role has an offseason focus, to allow him to continue broadcasting.

Blandino was also an officiating consultant for the Alliance of American Football and is a contributor to The Athletic. He held the position of executive producer of Her Turf, a 2018 documentary about three female football referees. On January 6, 2020, Blandino was appointed by the XFL to be the league’s head of officiating.
