Dede Byrne Biography

Sister Dede Byrne is an American surgeon, retired Army colonel, and member of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary religious order. She is one of the speakers at the 2020 Republican National Convention where she will be speaking on the third day.

She attended and graduated from Virginia Tech before starting medical school at Georgetown. While in medical school, Byrne entered the Army as a way to cover her tuition and ended up serving for 29 years as both a doctor and a surgeon.

Dede Byrne Career

After graduating, Sister Dede worked from 1982 until 1985 in the field of family medicine and was a full-time Army officer from 1982 until 1989. Later, Sister Dede went on to serve as a missionary from 1989 until 1990, while remaining in the Army reserve, and she completed a second residency in general surgery in 1997.

She is a medical doctor whose long career has been marked by extraordinary service. She served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, on active duty in Afghanistan, and later as a reservist, eventually rising to the rank of colonel. As a missionary surgeon, Sister Dede devoted herself to helping the sick in Kenya, Sudan, Haiti, and Iraq.

In 2002, she entered formation with the Little Workers and professed her first vows in 2004. While in formation, Sister Dede was still a member of the Army Reserve and was deployed three times. After a deployment to Afghanistan in 2008, Dede’s order requested that she retire from the military, which she did in 2009, before professing her final vows in 2011.
