Derek Kevra Biography
Derek Kevra is an American Meteorologist for Fox 2 News Detroit. Tech Geek. He is a Michigan native born and raised in Livonia. He schooled at Stevenson High School, Riley Middle School, and Coolidge Elementary.
Kevra was awarded his Meteorology degree from the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences Department of the University of Michigan. Derek was awarded the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) seal from the American Meteorological Society in 2012.
According to the AMS, the seal represents that, “the holder meets specific educational and experience criteria and has passed rigorous testing in their knowledge and communication of meteorology and related sciences needed to be an effective broadcast meteorologist.” He was honored to have won multiple Emmys for Best Weathercast in Michigan by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
He attended his internship at Fox 2 News, his career started at KDRV in Medford, OR as their morning meteorologist. Two years later he joined New Orleans, where he worked at WWL-TV. Studying Tropical Meteorology in school helped prepare him for the extensive severe weather coverage they had during hurricane season.
Hurricane Isaac made landfall less than 100 miles south of New Orleans and they were on air 24 hours a day for 5 straight days back in 2012. It was an event that showed him the true power of Mother Nature. He felt he had to go back home to Metro Detroit at Fox 2 News. He has a wife and has 2 kids. When not at work they stay with their 2kids and love traveling Up North. Life is good!
