McClurkin was born and raised in Copiague, New York in the United States of America. He was brought up along with his brother and sisters. Unfortunately, when he was eight years old his two-year-old brother was hit and killed by a speeding driver. Soon after they lost him, the family experienced turmoil. McClurkin was never lucky, he was a victim of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of his great uncle, and years after that by his great uncle’s son.

In addition to his story, his two sisters dealt with substance abuse problems which led him to find solace in going to a church and, also through an aunt, Andraé Crouch of his who sang background vocals with a gospel musician. He had formed the McClurkin Singers by the time he was a teenager. Later, he formed another group, the New York Restoration Choir, with recordings from as early as 1975.

Minister McClurkin found himself in a position to practice what he was preaching to people. In 1991, he experienced internal bleeding, swelling, and sharp pain. That’s when he was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctor suggested immediate treatment, but he decided to take his own advice. By then he was only 31 years old, still young.

“I tell people to believe that God will save you, and I had to turn around and practice the very thing that I preached.” He was ordained and sent out by the Winans in 2001 to establish Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport, New York, where he is now Senior Pastor.

His 1996 self-titled LP was a result of his friendship with a Warner Alliance executive with producers Victor Caldwell plus Andraé Crouch, Cedric, Mark Kibble of Take 6, and Bill Maxwell. Oprah Winfrey publicly lauded McClurkin’s disc, which featured the perennially popular “Stand,” and went gold shortly.
