Gomez went to Coral Gables High School where he attained his high school diploma. In 1969, he joined Princeton University where he attained his B.A. in Geophysical Science in 1973. He, later on, joined Wake Forest School of Medicine where he attained his Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Anatomy in 1978.

Gomez serves as a medical correspondent at NBC2/WNBC and WCBS-TV in New York City. He also spent some years working on the national board of directors for the American Heart Association. On joining NBC2, he started off by serving as a Health and Science Editor.

Gomez worked at the Science Writers Fellowship where he was also on the board of advisers.
