Winner of numerous journalism awards, Dr. Gomez has received seven New York Emmy Awards, two Philadelphia Emmys Awards, the UPI Award for Best Documentary on AIDS, and the New York City Award for Excellence in Crisis Time after 11 September. In addition, for his report on two twin girls from Long Island, both suffering from leukemia, who received bone marrow transplants from their seven-year-old sister, Dr. Gomez received national television journalism awards from the Marfan National Foundation and the Leukemia Society of America. He was also named Man of the Year by the American Health Foundation and was a semi-finalist for NASA Journalist-In-Space in 1986.

Dr. Gomez has served on the American Heart Association, the Princeton Alumni Weekly, and the Partnership for After School Education’s national board of directors. He also mentors journalism undergraduate and medical students and doctors who are interested in medical journalism. Dr. Gomez has served on the advisory board for the Science Writers Fellowship at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts; the Hope and Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund at the New York Children’s Hospital; is a member of the honorary board of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Long Island Chapter, and has served as the Grand Marshal of the Multiple Sclerosis Walk for Over a decade.

Dr. Gomez is also co-author of The Healing Cell: How the Greatest Revolution in Medical History Changes Your Life, a primer on the numerous uses of adult stem cells in the treatment and healing of diseases. It includes an introductory message from Pope Benedict XVI. Previously, Dr. Gomez served as WNBC-Health TVs and Science Editor. Gomez joined WNBC-TV in 1997 after serving as a medical reporter and health editor for WCBS-TV from 1994 to 1997. Previously, he was a health and science editor for KYW-TV in Philadelphia and a health and science reporter/editor for WNEW-TV. Dr. Gomez, a native of Havana, Cuba, speaks Spanish. He graduated from Princeton University with a Ph.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was also an N.I.H. Postdoctoral Fellow at Rockefeller University in New York.
