Ellen Bacca Biography
Ellen Bacca is an American meteorologist working for WOOD as the chief meteorologist since July 2021. Her forecasts appear at 6 p.m., 7 pm., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m. Additionally, she appears on the weekly Ask Ellen series. She joined the station in September 2014 and has served the station for more than half a decade.

Bacca joined Valparaiso University in 2006 when she finished her high school education. In 2010, she graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Meteorology.

During her time at WOOD, she has won two Emmy awards for Best Weathercast and Weather Anchor in Michigan. The Michigan Association of Broadcasters granted her its Best Weathercast Awards. She was among the few chosen in the nation to participate in the National Severe Storms Laboratory Hazardous Weather Testbed. The study tested the next generation of tornadoes and harsh storm warnings.
Bacca has a passion for severe weather and communication. Since joining WOOD, she has broadcasted floods, blizzards, high water levels, and multiple tornado occasions such as the tornado outbreak of Aug. 20, 2016.
Every fall and spring, Bacca hosts hundreds of elementary school students in a real-life TV studio for WOOD’s exclusive Weather Experience. Through the program, kids learn everything about severe weather with hands-on encounters.
At the close of the WOOD’s exclusive Weather Experience, each student practices their newly acquired knowledge on the green screen and experiences what itβs like to be on TV themselves. She worked in the mountains of Helena, Montana and the banks of New Bern before joining WOOD.
