Erik von Ancken is a well-reputed American Emmy Award-winning Journalist working as an anchor/reporter for WKMG-TV. He joined the station in February 2003. His reporting has earned him more than a dozen prestigious awards recognizing him as one of the best and most trusted journalists in the southeastern United States. Both for his anchoring and reporting, he has been honored with Emmys along with numerous nominations for his storytelling and investigative work, as well as numerous first-place and best-overall awards from the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.
Erik grew up competing in and teaching slalom skiing, waterboarding, barefoot skiing, and snow skiing, Also, he is a snow skier, tennis player, keyboard player, and self-proclaimed handyman. He has a brown belt in Okinawan Goju-Ru Karate, speaks Finnish, and loves to volunteer. The organizations and charities close to his heart are Seminole County Schools’ Families in Transition, Runway to Hop, and the Ronald McDonald House. Moreover, he loves to give a lending hand at the annual Orlando Chili Cook-Off and Monsters Celebrity Bowl-A-Rama, enjoys emceeing fundraisers of all kinds, and speaks to students about his passion for journalism whenever he can.

He received his education at Scarsdale Senior High School where he graduated in June 1994. After graduating from high school, he attended Binghamton University where he graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with minors in Spanish Concentrations in Literature and Rhetoric. Erik joined the station days after the tragic loss of the space shuttle Columbia. Since then, he has gone on to cover almost every shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center including the Return to Flight Mission of Shuttle Discovery in 2005 and the final Space Shuttle launch and landing in 2011. He is one of only a handful of journalists in the world to have sat in the commander’s seat on the flight deck of Space Shuttle Atlantis. From the beginning, Erik has covered and continues to cover the next phase of America’s space program. In 2014, he got the ride of his life in the back seat of an F-16 with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds!
He has covered countless national stories including President George W. Bush’s visit to Sarasota for what was supposed to be a routine on September 11, 2001. He was celebrating his engagement in October 2006 at a beachfront in Hawaii when a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Big Island, centered only a few miles from Krona where he and his then-fiancee were vacationing. Amid the chaos, he went to work reporting from his hotel. Prior to working at WKMG-TV, he worked at ABC 7 WWSB-TV as a reporter from May 2000 to February 2003. From 1998 to 2000, he worked as a reporter for WMBC-TV 63 News.
