Gary Lezak Biography
Gary Lezak is a retired American meteorologist who has been the founder and CEO of Weather 2020 since July 2008. He previously worked for KSHB 41 News as the chief meteorologist. He joined the station in January 1999 and worked there until his retirement on December 1, 2022.

The team has also been No. 1 in forecasting since he arrived here in 1992.
Lezak temporarily came out of retirement in April 2025 to fill in for KSHB morning meteorologist Lindsey Anderson while she was on maternity leave for 12 weeks. During this period, he delivered the weekday morning forecasts live via Zoom from his home in Colorado.
An animal lover, Lezak shared airtime with his well-known dogs: Windy the Weather Dog, Breezy, Stormy, and Sunny. Windy the Weather Dog appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2000. That tradition has continued with dogs appearing on the news set each Friday.
Lezak’s passion for the weather developed as he learned his first words. He was taken with clouds and rain while growing up in Southern California. After graduating from college, he got his first big break in 1986 as the morning meteorologist at KWTV-TV in Oklahoma City. In 1992, he moved to Kansas City, where he has spent over 3 decades.

Lezak discovered that the weather patterns were cycling in the 1980s, realizing that accurate weather forecasts could be made using this new technology. A peer-reviewed paper was published in 2018, making him an author of a scientific discovery. He has also authored a children’s story called βItβs A Sunny Life.β

Lezak’s biggest challenge was being diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called extraskeletal osteosarcoma in 1999. Only six adults are diagnosed with that type of cancer in the United States every year. After the doctors discovered it was very aggressive, they recommended he undergo extensive chemotherapy.
Lezak underwent two surgeries before chemotherapy treatments began. He has been cancer-free since 2000, an achievement he celebrates every day! He talks about his cancer experience and his passion for weather during his public appearances. In addition, he spent over 20 years as an MC for local fundraising events like the American Cancer Societyβs Shave to Save campaign.
