Gen. Jack Keane(John M. “Jack” Keane) is a retired American four-star United States Army general working for Fox News as a senior strategic analyst. Also, he serves the Institute for the Study of War and AM General as chairman. From 1999 to 2003, he worked as the Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army.

Keane attended Fordham University after completing his high school studies at Bishop Dubois High School. He graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Accounting. During his time in college, he partook in the Pershing Rifles. Further, he holds a Master Of Arts degree in Philosophy from Western Kentucky University. Moreover, he graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College and the US Army War College.

Keane advises the Spirit of America and previously served Academi as a strategic advisor. Further, he served General Dynamics as a director. He declined the chance to work as Secretary of Defense in November 2016 after Stanley A. McChrystal refused the post. After the December 2018 resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Trump offered Keane the post but he declined again.
Military
Keane worked as a Ranger paratrooper during the Vietnam War, where he led combat as a platoon leader and company commander. Further, he attained the Combat Infantry Badge and the Master Parachutist Badge. Later, he served in U.S. engagements in Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, and Kosovo. He commanded the 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, 101st Airborne Division, and the XVIII Airborne Corps.
In 1991 Keane rescued David Petraeus during a live-fire drill. According to him, David was accidentally shot right next to him and he had to fight to save his life. David had a hole about the size of a quarter in his back and was streaming with blood. They stopped the bleeding and got him on a helicopter to a surgeon thus their bond since then. Keane quit the military service in 2003.
Post-Retirement
After retiring, Keane worked as an informal advisor to presidents and other senior officials. For example, he worked as a member of the Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee, where he provided advice on the management of the US occupation of Iraq.
In January 2007, he and Frederick W. Kagan issued a policy paper, “Choosing Victory: A Plan for Success in Iraq,” via the American Enterprise Institute. The paper suggested security by placing 30,000 extra American troops in Iraq for at least 18 months. President George W. Bush then demanded the deployment of 21,500 extra troops to Iraq. The deployment was nicknamed the 2007 “surge.”
During his first meeting with President Bush in regard to the surge, he asked Newt Gingrich for advice via a phone call. Vice President Cheney then requested him to return to active duty and lead the surge in the field. He declined and Cheney asked him to work in the White House and head both the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which he also declined. Keane then shortly worked at the White House before traveling to Iraq multiple times to counsel General Petraeus.

He holds an honorary Ph.D. degree in Law from Fordham University and an honorary Ph.D. degree in Public Service from Eastern Kentucky University.
