Previously, he served WCAU NBC Philadelphia as a chief meteorologist from January 1995 to May 2022.

After graduating college, Schwartz started his career when he served AccuWeather in State College, Pennsylvania. Next, he served the National Hurricane Center in Miami from 1974 to 1977. While in Miami, he obtained experience with hurricanes.
Schwartz’s first TV appearance was when he served WAGA in Atlanta from 1979 to 1983. In 1985, he joined The Weather Channel where he worked as the network’s first hurricane specialist. The following year, he left the network for WNYW in New York. While in New York, he attained the nickname “Hurricane” after a video of a colleague saw a video of him being blown around.
Schwartz served in New York until 1990 when he relocated to West Palm Beach to serve WPBF. After his time at WPBF, he served WINK in Fort Myers and WRAL in Raleigh respectively. In October 1995, he rejoined Philadelphia and started serving WCAU as a meteorologist. In 2002, he started serving the station as the chief meteorologist till 2017 when Tammie Souza took on the role. He served as the NBC affiliate till his 2022 retirement. During his career, he was known for wearing a bow tie during broadcasts as requested in his contract. In 2010, he served in the Philadelphia Broadcast Hall of Fame as an inductee.
Books
Schwartz co-authored the book, The Philadelphia Area Weather Book with fellow meteorologist Jon Nese. The book details his live TV broadcasts of Hurricane Floyd. Further, he published a climate fictional novel dubbed The Weathermaker in a paperback edition in January 2020.
