Guy Penrod is an American gospel music singer who is best known for serving as the lead singer of the Gaither Vocal Band. He was part of the band for 14 years (1994-2008).

Penrod is a proud alumnus of Liberty University, where he studied music and vocal performance for 4 years. During his time there, he served as a representative of the University by singing and traveling on Saturdays and Sundays. Penrod began his career in the ’80s, working as a studio singer where he backed up voices like Michael W. Smith, Carman, Amy Grant, Garth Brooks, Steve Green, James Ingram, Shania Twain, and Phillips, Craig & Dean. He was also a member of the Christ Church Choir. As a studio singer, he got to meet Bill Gaither for the very first time. In the mid-’90s, Penrod appeared severally and often on TNN’s Music City Tonight as a background singer. He contributed several tracks in the year 1989, as lead vocal on a Brentwood cassette (C-5103N) named “Following The Sun – Island Music For Believers”.

1987 – 1999

In the year 1987, he performed shortly with the Stamps Quartet, while working for Opryland. He accepted the position with the Gaither Vocal Bandin the year 1994 and became known internationally for his broad singing range and powerful vocals. Penrod has performed in Gaither Homecoming concerts across Canada and the United States, and in Africa, Australia, and Europe. Penrod did a duet with Glen Payne (the Cathedral Quartet’s lead singer) in the year 1999 on their Farewell Celebration video.

2005 – 2011

Penrod’s album “The Best of Guy Penrod” became #92 on the Billboard 200 in August 2005. RIAA certified platinum the DVD. In the year 2006, his band The Gaither Vocal Band released “Give It Away” and then “Give It Away” in the year 2008. He was awarded a Grammy Award for his work on the “Lovin Life” project. Penrod launched his first solo album in August 2009 and titled it “Breathe Deep.” This album consists of positive country music with Christian undertones. In the year 2011, he was inducted into the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

2012

His 2nd album “Hymns” reached #1 on the Nielsen SoundScan Southern Gospel retail chart. The album sold more than 100,000 units, becoming the top-selling southern gospel album of 2012. He became the new host of a popular Daystar Television Network Emmy Award-winning program, “Gospel Music Showcase” in the year 2012. This program concentrates on southern gospel music and airs on Saturdays.

2013 & 2014

In the year 2013, the National Quartet Convention awarded him “Soloist of the Year.” In May 2014, he released his 3rd solo album, “Worship.” One month later, he released his 1st solo Christmas project named “Christmas.” This album reached #2 album in Cracker Barrel stores with about 30,000 units sold. In the same year, he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

2016

In January 2016, he released his 1st solo DVD, “Live: Hymns & Worship”, filmed at Thomas Road Baptist Church. It reached #1 on the Billboard chart for music videos sold after it was released. The album became number two on the “Billboard” chart for contemporary Christian music. Penrod was featured as a performer at the Faith Freedom & Future Inaugural Ball, in the fall of 2016.

2017 – 2018

In January 2017, Penrod was a featured performer in the United States Pres. Trump’s inauguration in Washington. He returned with an album “Classics” in March. This album was a new solo recording of famous songs he performed during his time with “The Gaither Vocal Band”. In the same year, Penrod made often guest artist appearances on the stage of the “Grand Ole Opry”. In February 2018, Penrod released his seventh album release “Blessed Assurance.” It includes him singing 12 newly recorded hymns that feature his signature country sound.

Guy Penrod Heart Attack

In August 2012, he got experienced a near-fatal heart problem for the first time. He had to undergo a minor surgical recovery procedure and implant heart stents. This news spread amongst Penrod’s fans global-wide, and they were concerned about his health. Gaither Music made an official announcement about his heart problem on August 21, 2012. It was announced that Penrod underwent heart surgery, and they did not say anything about him having a heart attack. The heart attack thing is rumors. Penrod’s heart problem used to force him to postpone his solo concerts. However, he recovered and is now healthy.
