Henri Richard was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played centre with the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1955-1975.
He won 11 Stanley Cups as a player, the most in NHL history. He was named one of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ in history in 2017.
Richard was the brother of Maurice Richard a Canadiens legend and fellow Hockey Hall of Famer. The two brothers’ style of play was quite different.
While Maurice shot left, Richard shot right. Maurice played right-wing and Richard played centre. Richard led the league in assists in 1957–58 and 1962–63, a feat never matched by Maurice though the latter had led the league in goals five times. Lastly, he totaled over 1,000 points, a mark never reached by Maurice.
Richard was named captain of the Canadiens in 1971 until his retirement in 1975 after his team was eliminated in the playoffs by the Buffalo Sabres. In 1979, Richard was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1998, Richard was ranked number 29 on The Hockey News’ list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players. In 2015, it was announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the team, he survived by his wife, Lise, his children Michele, Denis, Gilles, Marie-France and Nathalie, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
