Jackie Layer is an American meteorologist working for DC News Now as the chief meteorologist since she was promoted in July 2025. She joined the station in May 2022 as a weekday morning meteorologist. Previously, she worked for 7 NEWS WHDH in Boston, Massachusetts, as a weekend morning meteorologist for 4 years.

Layer joined Penn State University in 2009 after finishing high school. In 2013, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology. While in college, she participated in the Campus Weather Service, the Penn State University Branch of the American Meteorological Society (PSUBAMS), the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences THON, and the Penn State University Chapter of the National Weather Association (PSUCNWA).

Layer holds the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) distinction. Besides her work on TV, she sits on the board for Certified Digital Meteorologists (CDM) and on Penn State University’s Meteorology and Atmospheric Science External Advisory Board.
Layer developed an interest after the Blizzard of ’96, a nor’easter that brought more than 30′′ of snow to parts of the Northeast. This interest flourished further during a family trip to Florida interrupted by Hurricane Charley in 2004. Preparing for a big hurricane while on vacation opened her eyes and cemented her decision to pursue a meteorology career.
In addition to her daily weather duties, Layer loves traveling to local schools to endorse fun ways to learn about weather with a strong focus on preparation when severe weather hits. When schools turned virtual during the pandemic, she began a daily weather lesson/experiment series that helped families teach science outside of the classroom. She still gets positive feedback about this initiative to this day.
