Jay Plyburn Biography

Jay Plyburn is an American journalist working for WBNS as an anchor for 10TV News This Morning since joining the station in October 2024. Previously, he worked as an evening anchoring role for a news station in Northern Michigan.

Jay Plyburn Education

Plyburn joined Marshall University in 2002 after finishing his high school education. In 2007, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. While in college, he served Kappa Alpha Order as the Corresponding Secretary and Social Chair from 2004 to 2007. He also worked for Delta Epsilon Chi Business Fraternity as the Vice President.

While growing up, he was on stage and participated in many theatre productions. This developed her passion for performing arts and the entertainment industry. After graduating from college, he briefly served at a local radio station before securing a TV news job.

Plyburn launched his journalism career in West Texas as a weekend weatherman and news reporter. There, he covered the weather, news, and sports, as well as had the chance to anchor his first broadcast. This opened doors for him in Northwest Arkanas, where he was a weekend evening anchor and was promoted to weekday morning anchor.

Following his time in Arkansas, Plyburn moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked with a local acting studio. There, he pursued acting and producing opportunities while working several jobs, from acting/improv coach to acting/improv coach, Uber driver, and “demo booth guy” at Trader Joe’s, where he gave food samples to customers.

Tegna employed him in October 2018, where he helped in the launch of a pilot program called MyNews. The program provided hyperlocal news broadcasts in specific pockets of metro Atlanta but was later disbanded during the pandemic in the summer of 2020. At the time, and his wife sold nearly all their belongings and renovated a camper van, traveling the country for about 5 months. The duo isolated themselves in the van while the world was shutting down, living on their savings while they visited many national parks and farmers’ markets.

Plyburn accepted a morning news anchor position at the Tegna station in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in early 2021. He helped the viewers of West Michigan start their day for more than 3 years. He and his workmates caught national attention for their frequent TikTok dance videos, gaining high praise from Derek Hough of Dancing with the Stars fame. After the birth of his daughter, he switched to an evening anchoring role for a news station in Northern Michigan. When the station closed operations in August 2024, he jumped at the opportunity to work in Columbus.
