Jeff Semple Biography

Jeff Semple is a Canadian journalist who is working at Global News based in Toronto. He serves as a Senior Digital Broadcast Journalist at the station. He also serves as the host of Rising which is a podcast series that was the #1 podcast in Canada on iTunes in 2019. In addition, he joined the Global News team in February 2019.

Semple is currently working at the Global News Toronto bureau where he serves as the Senior Digital Broadcast Journalist. Previously, he worked in London, United Kingdom as the Europe Bureau Chief for Global News from August 2015 to February 2019. He has also worked at CBC News where he served as a correspondent and video journalist from October 2013 to August 2015. Over the years, he has reported from more than 30 countries across five continents, where he has covered; the refugee crisis in the Middle East,   terrorist attacks in Europe, and the Olympic Games in South Korea, Brazil, and Russia. In addition, he has also filed from the United Nations’ deadliest mission in Mali, West Africa, on the frontlines of the fight against ISIS in Iraq, and not long ago, he was deployed to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Furthermore, Semple reported from inside overwhelmed hospitals in both Canada and the United States from the first days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The  Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television nominated him for the Best National Reporter category in 2021 for his coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, his reports have been recognized by Apple Podcasts, the Canadian Online Publishing Awards, the Canadian Medical Association, and the Radio Television Digital News Association. Semple’s stories have appeared on ABC, NPR, Sky News, CNN, and BBC. Furthermore, he serves as a regular backfill anchor for Global National and has forged a reputation as one of Canada’s top multimedia video journalists, shooting and editing his own reports. He attended Ryerson University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism. During his senior year, he interned at The Eyeopener newspaper and CKLN 88.1 FM.
