On March 16, 2020, Haller became the first patient to be injected with a potential COVID-19 vaccine in a clinical trial. The COVID-19 vaccine was developed by Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle.

The vaccine candidate, code-named mRNA-1273, was developed by the NIH and Massachusetts-based biotechnology company Moderna Inc. The researchers said there is no chance participants can get infected from the shots because they don’t contain the coronavirus itself.

They also clarified in a news release, the team needs to first classify the “safety of various doses and whether these doses produce an immune response. Phase I trials are not designed to determine whether the vaccine is effective in preventing coronavirus infection. That work comes at a later phase of the vaccine research.”
