Joe Furey Career

Furey has worked for WTNH as the co-chief meteorologist for WTNH since 2024. He has worked in the field of broadcast meteorology for over 4 decades, doing weather on TV/Radio and so much more in Connecticut.

After receiving his Master’s degree, he worked as a graduate assistant and teacher at the Western Connecticut State University Weather Center in Danbury under the direction of Dr. Mel Goldstein, where he was later promoted to assistant director. One of his favorite weather stories is when Dr. Mel assigned him to set up their new weather data recording station on the roof above the weather office at WCSU. A few weeks later, Hurricane Gloria came, and they were excited when the anemometer recorded an 83 mph wind gust. Later, the weather station flew past the window they were looking out of and smashed on the ground because he had forgotten to secure it to the roof!

Furey joined NEWS12 Connecticut in the mid 1980s while serving many radio stations like KC101, WAVZ, and WICC. While there, he forecasted 1 inch of snow, and they got 1 foot. The following day, a bucket of snow fell on his head while he was doing the weather live on TV. In the late 80s, he relocated to the Hartford region, where he worked as the head of f Meteorology/Teaching at the Talcott Mountain Science Center/Academy. Also, he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford and the director of The New England Weather Service in Hartford.

Furey enjoys visiting schools across Connecticut to talk about broadcasting, weather, and lots of other significant issues. He regards his grandparents as the possible inspiration for his love for weather when he was young. Hailing from Newfoundland, Canada, his grandparents slept with a window open during the winter and talked about icebergs that passed by their house in St John’s, Newfoundland. They also shared stories about winter when the snow was so deep and so high that they relied on their second-floor window as a means of exit.
