During his career at the station, he broadcasted virtually each big sporting event in the area including the 1985 I-70 World Series between the Cards and Royals (clinched by the Royals).
Hickman covered the 1992 and 2001 Missouri State Lady Bears trips to the basketball Final Four, the 2000 St. Louis Rams Super Bowl win, the 2002 Evangel men’s basketball national championship, the 2004 Drury Lady Panthers basketball national runner-up finish, the 2006 College of the Ozarks men’s basketball national championship, the 2006 and 2011 Cardinals World Championships, the 2013 Drury men’s basketball national championship, and the 2015 Royals World Championship.
Hickman’s feature segment, “Joe’s Journal,” has earned many Emmy, Missouri Broadcaster, and Kansas City Press Club awards as well as the Edward R. Murrow Award. Additionally, the Radio Television Digital News Association awarded him for the segment.
