Joey Barnes Biography
Joey Barnes is an American journalist working for WCBI as an anchor and the news director since November 2020. He rejoined the station in 2013 as an assistant news director and anchor. This serves as his third stint with the station, having initially served the station from 2002 to August 2005 as a reporter and then, from December 2006 to 2012 as an anchor and reporter.

Barnes has worked for WCBI as an anchor and the news director since November 2020. In this role, he anchors the 6 p.m. newscast on weeknights alongside veteran co-anchor Aundrea Self. Upon joining the station, he worked as an assistant news director and anchor.
He has worked as a news reporter in North Mississippi and West Alabama for more than 15 years. He started his news career in 2002 with an internship at WCBI. In five years, he climbed ranks to senior reporter before he left to serve his alma mater, Mississippi University for Women, as a recruiter. There, he recruited students, traveled, and participated in college fairs.
After serving his alma mater, he joined the Independent News Network in Davenport, Iowa where he worked as a reporter for 8 months. Next, he rejoined WCBI where he worked as an anchor and reporter for 5 years before joining WLBT in Jackson, Mississippi as a weekend anchor and a reporter for a year.
Having grown up in Columbus and Millport, he understands the area’s culture, people, and businesses that have influenced his career. His work assisted in convincing the Legislature to prohibit the use and possession of Salvia in the state.
On April 27, 2011, he was on the ground for days following deadly tornadoes raked across North Mississippi and West Alabama. He also followed the reconstruction for years since then. he was present during former President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in Columbus in 2008. In addition, he watched an inmate executed at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchment.
Barnes also depicted the pain felt by the family of a slain veteran Jackson Police detective, spoke about all sides of officer-involved shootings across the area, and provided his special understanding of the debate over Mississippi’s open and concealed carry gun laws.
Barnes became a key player at the Neshoba County Fair and even shared the carefree side of the fun of the Mississippi State Fair. He even flew with the world-renowned United States Air Force Thunderbirds. His work has many awards from the Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association and community groups.
