Potts joined Quincy College(now Quincy University) in 1975 after finishing his studies at Quincy High School. In 1979, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts. He was the first winner of the Thomas A. Oakley I and II Scholarship to QC in 1975.

Potts served the Tulsa World in 1979 and was the director of public relations at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, from 2003 to 2006. Also, he served Baldwin School in Quincy as a paraprofessional in the special ed/autism program.
