Jon Rivas Biography
Jon Rivas is an American meteorologist working for KCCI 8 News as a weekday morning meteorologist since joining the station in November 2023. Previously, he worked as the morning meteorologist at KIMT in Mason City/Rochester.

Rivas joined Texas A&M University after finishing his high school education. In 2013, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science and a minor in Mathematics. While in college, he and his colleagues helped the local NWS office by launching weather balloons when necessary. He also helped the NOAA Nation Severe Storms Laboratory with their Spring research by dispatching weather balloons and evaluating the atmospheric data.

He honed his weathercasting skills between shifts, leading to an opportunity to become the morning meteorologist at KIMT in Mason City/Rochester in 2015.
During his time at KIMT, he forecasted the weather for northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. Calling the region a weatherman’s paradise, he covered everything, including the cold and snowy winter months and the hot and volatile spring/summer months. He received a Regional Emmy Award in 2018 for winter weather coverage. His passion for the weather started during his childhood, during the historic floods of San Antonio in 1998.
