Jose Diaz-Balart (José Díaz-Balart Caballero) is a Cuban-American host and anchor working for NBC News. He joined the station in November 2015 and serves as an anchor on NBC Nightly News Saturday.  On September 7, 2021, he stepped down as anchor of the weeknight editions of Noticias Telemundo

Currently, he anchors a new 10 A.M. show called José Díaz-Balart Reports, on MSNBC. He will also continue to anchor breaking news and special events coverage for Telemundo and host monthly specials. Prior to joining NBC News, he worked for NBC Universal as a journalist and for CBS News as a news anchor.

He worked in radio prior to transitioning to television news. During his time working as the anchor of a new Telemundo morning program called Esta Manana, he interviewed a wide range of news-makers, including political leaders and candidates for president. Díaz-Balart has interviewed every U.S. president from Ronald Reagan’s time. In 2003, he returned to English-language TV where he landed an opportunity to work for WTVJ in Miami as a news anchor. Diaz-Balart moderated the Democratic Town Hall with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, in Las Vegas Nevada on February 18, 2016. In addition to that, he co-moderated the first Democratic Presidential Debates on NBC and Telemundo on June 26 and 27 of 2019.

He was raised by his father Rafael Díaz-Balart y Gutiérrez, who is a former Cuban politician, and his mother Hilda Caballero Brunet. Diaz-Balart was brought up along with his three brothers, Rafael Díaz-Balart who are a banker, Mario Díaz-Balart who is a  U.S. representative, and attorney, and Lincoln Díaz-Balart who is a former U.S. representative. In addition to that, his aunt, Mirta Diaz-Balart was the first wife of Fidel Castro therefore Fidel Castro Jr. (Fidelito) was his first cousin. His uncle, Waldo Diaz-Balart is an internationally recognized painter.

Hispanic Business Magazine named him one of the “100 most influential people in the U.S.,” and Media 100 named him the best news anchor three times and has also received a Du Pont and Peabody.

In 2010, the National Academy of Television Sciences recognized him with the Silver Circle Award. He was named GQ Magazine’s Best International Journalist in 2017. Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable presented him with the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hispanic Television at the 10th Annual Hispanic Television Summit, produced by Schramm Marketing in 2012. Furthermore, the multicultural Media Correspondents Association in Washington DC awarded him with the TV Broadcast Journalist Award in 2022.
