Jovana Lara Biography
Jovana Lara is an American journalist and broadcaster currently serving as a general assignment reporter and the weekend evening anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News. She is also co-host of the half-hour show, Vista L.A.
Jovana Lara Education
Lara went to Holy Family High School, an all-girls Catholic school, after graduating from Holy Family Grade School right across the street, where she loved playing volleyball.
While in high school, she was co-captain of the cheerleading squad and served on student council, but her fondest memories are of her time on the yearbook committee with Sister Suzanne Stopper.
Although Jovana was always interested in broadcasting, she graduated from Loyola Marymount University and originally pursued a career in business.
Jovana Lara Career
Lara began her career in Palm Springs working weekends for KESQ. After one year of reporting, she was promoted to weekend anchor. She then took on a second job reporting for the Orange County News Channel. Lara continued to work both in Palm Springs and Orange County until she was hired to report by KNSD in San Diego.
During her first year in San Diego, Lara won an Emmy for a story about a small village near Tijuana washed away in the 1997 mudslides of El Nino. Two other stories were also Emmy-nominated that year. Later, Jovana won commendations from the San Diego Press club.
Since joining ABC7 Eyewitness News in 2000, she has won two Emmys for her role as co-host on Vista L.A. She is also active on behalf of the station at many community events.

Jovana Lara Family
Lara was born in Cuba to Bonifacio Lara (father) but her family emigrated from Cuba to the United States due to the Communist Dictatorship when she was a small child. In 2014,
Lara shared the story of emigrating from Cuba. “It was the first time I had ever seen my father, Bonifacio Lara, cry, and it was over the memory of having to leave my mother and me in Cuba in 1969 to escape what had become Communist Cuba. I was 3 years old, and as he tells it, he feared he’d never see me again.”
“I get emotional when I think of it, because what we suffered was great,” he said, in Spanish. “I did not know if I was going to see you again.”
“It was nearly two years later before we were reunited in the United States. He was excited about our arrival from Mexico, where my mother and I spent three months waiting for our U.S. visas to be finalized. It was the day before my sixth birthday, one of the happiest days for my father.”
But for my mother, it was bittersweet, because in order to leave Cuba, she had to leave my older sister behind. Isabel, whose father was entrenched in the communist movement, wouldn’t allow her to leave the country.
We eventually settled in Glendale.
