Juan Merchan Biography
Juan Merchan is an eminent American judge and former prosecutor working currently as an acting justice of the New York State Supreme Court in New York County (Manhattan). He has been working in that position since April 2009.
Juan Merchan Education
He received his education at Baruch College where he graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor’s degree in Bachelor of Business Administration and Marketing management. Later, he attended Hofstra University School of Law where he earned a Juris Doctor in 1994. There, he was a Hofstra Environmental Law Digest member and Latino Law Students Association.

He works for New York County as an acting Justice of the Supreme Court – Criminal Term/Judge of the Court of Claims. He has been working at the station since April 2009. There, he presides over felony-level hearings and trials, precedes Justice of the Manhattan Mental Health Court, and presides as Justice of the Manhattan Veteran’s Treatment Court. Prior to this role, he was a Family Court Judge for Bronx County from August 2006 to April 2009. There, he presided over Juvenile Delinquency matters, designated felonies, and PINS Petitions. For seven years and one month, he was an Attorney General State of New York.
There, he held three roles, first, he was deputy assistant attorney general in charge – Nassau County Region from 1999 to 2001 in Nassau County Region. Second, as an assistant attorney general in charge of affirmative litigation – Nassau and Suffolk County regions from 2001 to 2003 in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. And third as an assistant attorney general in-charge-Nassau County Region from 2003 to 2006 in Nassau County. Juan worked for five years and one month for New York County District Attorney’s Office. There, he had two roles. First as an assistant district attorney – Trial Division from 1994 to 1998. Second, as an assistant district attorney in – Investigations Division from 1998 to 199 for Special Prosecutions Bureau.
Juan Merchan Notable Cases
In 2011, he presided over the case of a New York Police Department Sergeant William Eiseman. Eiseman admitted to conducting illegal searches and then lying about his actions in court. Eiseman pleaded guilty to first-degree perjury and official misconduct. Thus Merchan sentenced him to 24 days in jail. The following year, Juan presided over the criminal proceedings against Anna Gristina who was charged with operating an upscale prostitution ring on the Upper East Side. In February 2012, Gristina and a co-defendant had been arrested after an investigation by the Manhattan DA’s office. In late 2022, he oversaw the five-week criminal trial of the Trump Organization, the organization was convicted of 17 counts of tax fraud.
Moreover, he presided over the criminal case of Donald Trump’s former financial chief Allen Weisselberg who pleaded guilty to his role in a 15-year-long tax-fraud scheme. Allen admitted to evading taxes by accepting $1.7 million in off-the-books compensation and entered a plea agreement. Merchan then sentenced Weisselberg to five months at Rikers Island. He is the judge assigned to preside over the criminal trial of Steve Bannon, a former Trump adviser who was indicted in September 2022 on charges of fraud and money laundering in connection with a fundraising scheme. In November 2023, the case is set for trial. On April 4, 2023, he oversaw the arraignment of former U.S. President Donald Trump on 34 felony counts. On March 30, the indictment of Trump, delivered by a grand jury was unsealed the same day with Trump pleading not guilty.
