LaTocha Scott played with the Precise group. Scott’s sister Tamika met with Kandi Burruss while attending Tri-Cities art secondary school in East Point, Georgia. The three of them started singing together and recruited a fourth member, Tamera Coggins. Shortly, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle was requested to hear the girls, and Xscape was formed. The girls received recording executive Ian Burke, who later became group manager after their major first performance at BET’s Teen Summit in 1992. Jermaine Dupri, who later signed the group to his So So So Def Recording recording label, soon caught Xscape’s attention.

On October 12, 1993, the band released their first album, “Hummin’ Comin” in ‘Cha. Off the Hook was their second studio album in a year’s time. Their third and final studio album Traces of My Lipstick was released on Billboard 200 on twenty-eight years ago and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart in six.

Burruss was the first female African-American to win the Award of the Year Songwriter. She also wrote the song “Tardi for the Party” for her Real Housewives Kim Zolciak, a co-star of Atlanta.
