Watlington started his broadcasting career at WWAY in Wilmington while still in college. He started his stint as a production assistant and worked his way up the ranks to become a morning news anchor over the next nine years. He also worked as a weekend sports anchor and weekend news anchor.
During his time in Wilmington, Watlington played a role in WWAY’s broadcasts of events like presidential visits, Hurricane Floyd, two U.S. Open golf tournaments in Pinehurst, and PUNCW basketball in the NCAA tournament. In addition, he worked with Jerry Jackson, now chief meteorologist for WNCT Storm Team 9 Weather.
Before returning to ENC, Watlington was the sports director and anchor at Buckeye Cable Sports Network in Toledo, Ohio, where he spent 8 years. There, he followed Detroit Tigers baseball, from their spring training to their 2012 World Series appearance. He also covered Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball and a lot of college sports, including Notre Dame, Toledo, Ohio State, Michigan, and Bowling Green.
